Recently there have been quite some good concerts taking place in Paris, and among the numerous shows, I enjoyed a wonderful one this evening at Bercy with Depeche Mode...Nowadays, there are not many long-life groups like DM whose music can still be so modern and advanced. The ticket of the show was on sales a few months ago, and in a day or two, all were sold out. Luckily I secured my entry pass, and so the ticket in my drawer had always been a little reminder about the show day. Though being the first time to visit the venue in Bercy, I am not surprise with its set-up, and it is indeed a proper coliseum for big concerts and events. The concert was full house and the atmosphere was magnificent. DM has been marching their music avenue since the 80's, and so most of the audiences around me were "aged" middle class. But this did not necessarily mean that they lack the energetic emotion to the beat of music. At one glance, I was thinking if I have unconsciously become a member of the "aged" audience...bon! The concert brought the supporting band from New York named The Bravery, and they are one of the hype targets often appeared in magazines like NME and Q. Their music is solid and tactful, but more or less the group needs some more character to differentiate themselves from the other post-stroke New York post-punk new generation. The vocal of the band, amazingly, alike so much the voice of Robert Smith of the Cure. DM played their marvelous live in the following 1.5 hours. The stage design and lighting set up etc were just so astonishing. Perfect stage design. The soul of the performance, on top of the gorgeous live music and programming, would be the perfectly effect of live video projection on the back wall of the stage. Evolving from a scene of one black and white live feed of the group on the stage, the video projection divided like cell division to 2, 3, 4, 8 & 16 feeds at one go. The live editing of the video and camera perspective was of top quality. Lining on the groovy sound of DM, you would know what is the word "chic". It would just be a perfect demonstration of stardom band performance. I see now how a great band like DM can outcast the others. I guess U2 and Radiohead would be the other names that carry the same elements of excellence in their live performance.
Charisma was another ingredient for the show of DM, and when you see how Dave sings or Martin plays his guitar, you simply make a node of why the aged crowd could keep shaking their rhythmic bodies or clapping their hands. And not to mention, their "oldies" have always been the golden moment in the concert.
