行者無疆...(2/1)

A journey would occasionally have an end...having read the observation of 余秋雨 in the 5-month journey in Europe for a Phoenix TV programme could be a way to conclude mine on the continent. Reading from chapters to chapters, it was like a road track to the scenery of my left-behind. Worshiping the exotic wide open space, the observation and thoughts of the author clicked my motor of memory. The book was not a perfect one to me. The author contemplated from the identity of being a Chinese and his way to look for inspiration for the modern development in China, both infrastructural and mentally, was a good incentive. There was not much in depth conclusion developed at last though. A longer journey in Europe is usually inspirational. In a sense, it is a utopia of multiplicity as I always label the land. Diversity of people and history and culture and environment can never be diluted by the EU unity momentum. In the last two millenniums, this piece of land with emblems and marks accommodated countless quarrels and fights. People remembered and forgot. When the people search their utopia, they already have one.
I the group where I belong to is a further minority. We are the Chinese of Hong Kong, and I trust that it would not be strange not to have the same way of thinking as the author, as least I can fully understand the concern (and probably the necessary tagline for a book to be commercialised) of the author living in Shanghai (or Shenzhen) about the current Chinese development.
The perspective of seeing a city in Europe varies from time and experience. One of my friends told me before that he felt dull visiting the cities in Europe as time went by. He said that every city was more or less the same. I do not agree with him. It is dull because the visit lacks an insight about the place and the people. The very complex (or better called chaotic) development of Europe after various forms of exchange from wars and recognition engraves a very unique yet interesting story for each city. The author was experienced in travelling and perhaps knowledgeable in European history, but his self-devoted reasoning and explanation are sometimes unsound and often exaggerated. This was the feeling I had when reading the second part of the book. Nature is a good phrase, and here I learn about the world of nature, added to the human nature. Nadja of André Breton started with the question of 'who am I'. This is the same. Putting oneself into a strange environment drives you to question your identity. It's self-learning and it is powerful. I have done some travel in Europe and I opened up my world. It is a growth. Human vision is often shortly focused, and the spacious sky above here allows you to extend your sight. I am reaching the last mile of this journey. I learnt at least how to decide, if I am lucky to have the choice. Reading the last part of the book on the voyage to the Northern Europe was like combining the heaven and the humankind. I chose to pair the albums of Sigur Ros to correspond the end of the world the author reached. The landscape was harmonically stunning.

and more...
The writing style of the author demonstrates a modern approach of the pop culture in China. Definitely, people in China are very much interested in knowing about the world, and this kind of writing on journey is no wonder a typical type of hot picks in the Chinese book market at present.

Xiao wu...(13/11)

Jia Zhang Ke is one of the most acclaimed directors in the sixth generations of the Chinese cinema. My first sight to his moving picture is the story of xiao wu, a work produced during his early filming stage...don't know why but the story of xiao wu appears to me a lot like the blue mood in Dekalog 5 of Kieslowski. Both stories talk about a gloomy life of a youth in the city crashed with enormous changes and adaptation. Apparently there is not much hope to the two young men. Xiao wu and Dekalog 5 are lively illustration of the polemic definition of human nature whether it is good or bad. I cannot draw a line between the two, as I believe there are both traits in the nature. The filming of Jia is artistic, and the Shanxi province under his camera was filled with a taste of communist glory and tragedy. There were use of long shot and close up in the film, and without having much criticising dialogue in the film, the sketch of the urban development in Shanxi was already violently denouncing. There is always a mix feeling of being a Chinese in the debut 21st century.

Three Times...(26/11)

The higher the expectation, the greater the disappointment. Chosen as the selection of the Cannes Festival last May, the film is on screen in France at the moment...The film, as stated in its name, compiles love story three times in different timeline, 1911, 1965 and 2005. Every fifty years represents a change of the sense of value for the Chinese, and the perception to love, according to Hou, is not the same. Starting from the dream of love in 1965, it's a plain and unimpactful love pursue. Not having a mood of love, the story is as clear as water without a rational taste. The 1911 story is, on the other hand, a showcase of the home decoration of the era. It talks about the dream of liberty, and again, it does not leave a revolving bounce after watching. All the credits go to the special use of mime film technique of putting all the dialogues on screen instead of having any vocal. Interesting. 2005 is a modern story, but it is a superficial translation of the modern love affair. Three times disappointment, and that's all. To a certain extent, Hou falls into the trap of the success formula of Wong Kar Wai...in terms of filming and shots with non-stop smoking act. Something very unique for the filming character of Hou is the close up of the character while blurring the background at a longer distance. Very dreamy and artistic though...(C+)

Chinese Business Community...(8/11)

According to a recent study of the online portal Objectif Chine, more than 3,110 Chinese enterprises exist in Paris, the capital of France...The figure corresponds to around 1.1% of the total number of enterprises in the region. Ranked the fourth biggest foreign business community in Paris, possesses a more energetic businessmen with an average age of 46.83 years-old, which is five years younger than that of the local businessmen. The result of the study is interesting. The Chinese business community is more balanced comparing with the French in terms of the proportion of male (52%) and female (48%) (only 31% of the French entrepreneurs are female). 64.5% of these three thousands companies have been established for less than five years. 532 new Chinese companies have registered in Paris in 2004. In terms of the annual turnover, only 19% of these enterprises could have achieved a figure of 100,000 euros in 2004. On the other hand, 28.6% had an annual running figure of only 50,000 euros. Concerning the domain mix, 40.5% works on commerce, 28% on restaurant business, and 15.7% on industrial businesses.

Observations and implications: The French in general admires the robust development in China but they fear about the threat of the low cost products from China. I guess this does not only reflect the perception of the French but also other European people. Looking at the balance male-female ratio from the research and the turnover volume, it is reckonable that the local Chinese community may engage much in low-end business, and both family members would have to work to get a life in Paris, where it has been ranked one of the most expensive cities in EU. While sustaining a competitive pricing, the quality of Chinese goods and services as well as the respect to property right are the two main issues I believe the Chinese businessmen need to always bear in mind. There has been media coverage on the hygiene standard of the Chinese restaurant in Paris. Quality is of great significance to the loyalty for consumers in France. Infringement is another issue for the Chinese. With regard to the post-quota export invasion for textile products from China to France, the critics from the local manufacturers would be an influential force that projects a confronting image of the Chinese people to the community. The throat-cutting cost and copycat design etc. highlighted in several press articles have drawn people's attention on how China should be position to the community in France. The recent violence in suburban area related to the topic of racial discrimination may be an alarm to the Chinese business community in Paris a need of a rightful image if the 400,000 Chinese community in France would have to live in harmony in the country.

A visit to Musée Cernuschi...(28/9)

Organised by the Asia Presse in Paris, I joined a cocktail reception last night at the newly renovated Musée Cernuschi...before the rendez-vous, there was a specially arranged guided tour for the participants to visit the museum, and well, it was an interesting experience to view quite numerous decoration artworks of the ancient China in a French style. The museum was established for quite some time in Paris exhibiting Chinese antique and classic houseware items from the Chow to Tong Dynasty. A sizeable budda scripture has been installed in the museum as well. The presentation of exhibits in the museum and the French version of on-site guidance provided me a projection of how the French people look at China arts and their admiration of the eastern history. Being a Chinese to visit the museum situated in Paris is a bit strange when all exhibits in front of you are indeed originated from China, but at the same time, you are feeling a bit shameful when you see how the French preserve nicely the artwork. This was a very weird and conflicting occasion for me to position myself. In some way, I act like one in the local community to enjoy the presentation of exhibits in French, and at the same time, I recalled my Chinese visage as well as the piece by piece memory I learnt from my Chinese History class and books about the various ancient Dynasties. Other visitors regarded me as a Chinese but well, I knew at that moment that I was less a total Chinese but something what we called ourselves the Chinese from Hong Kong. I would say, we the Hong Kong people lack the required baptism of the recognition of Chinese culture and history, and we lose in a search of our national identity. We got quite often an absent mind to our identity, our role and positioning in the world. We may regard a successful development of trade and economy as a substitute to the questioning of our own self. Watching from the globe, Hong Kong is a tiny point but no more. There seems a paradox for us to answer questions like “where are you from” and “what is your nationality”. We lack some form of life perhaps.

中國企業500強...(24/8)

The listed are the top 500 "enterprises" in China in 2005. Going through the list, you will have many questions and you may find that actually you are not too familar with the nature of business these companies are actually doing except what their company name depicts...or those more well-known after they have listed in Hong Kong Stock Exchange and develop their business outside China. The first question mark to begin with is how the authority calculate the "銷售收入" of these "enterprises". Is this the gross revenue excluding the stated supplied funding? Most of the enterprises, or better called the yet to be practically privatised Stated Owned Enterprises (SOE), engage in heavy industries like steel or oil production, infrastructure such as roadwork, postal service, water and electricity services, auto and auto parts production etc. Apparently China seems to be a heaven of business for this kind of industries. Being the world factory, there are less than sufficient enterprises of light production industries like garment, toys, electronic products or other consumer goods. Is it because these industries generally have less marginal revenue than those of the heavy industry or are there already completed consolidation/merger of business? The status of monopoly and protection from local government may be a reason of this pattern of distribution. Services companies like banking and insurance can be found on the list too. Something quite certain from this list is that the road to privatise and commercialise these SOEs are still long to go. I do not have the information but I wonder how many enterprises are developed from a background of pure entrepreneurship. Enterprises like Baidu, Sina or eBay China are not on the list yet. Airline and shipping companies are surprisingly not very impressive on the list. There is virtually only a few local consumer brands which appears on the list except those like 聯想, 國美, TCL, 青島啤酒, 娃哈哈, etc...

East Indian Company...(6/8)

Imagine Walmart becomes the governer of a country. Unimaginable? But can you imagine how a trading company could become a governmental body in the 17th century, and the company is called the East Indian Company (a.k.a. John Company or The Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies)...The Company was granted by the British Empire exclusively right to all trades in the East India from 1600 and this began its not only monopolistic but also governmental business in the East in the following two centuries. The Company's troops arrived in India for the first time at the port of Surat, in 1608, and it traded mainly silver, Indian tea and cotton and later opium produced in India to China (and Hong Kong). A pioneer business model of trading business, and its comparative advantage to trade exclusively enabled the Company to dominate 15% of the total import from India to Britain in 1720. With the profitable revenue margin, the Company acquired influential power in Britain and it developed its own military and administration force in India. It transformed itself to a ruling enterprise, and its military officials, Robert Clive, defeated the forces of the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-daulah , at the Battle of Plassey in 1757, rewarding himself the throne of being the First Governor in the city. This was something existed during the era of colonialism. 23 factories were built during its development of first 40 years in India, and it possessed dominant control in cities including Surat, Madras, Bombay, Calcutta, and later the majority of India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canton as well as the Java region. The time was still the embryonic stage of capitalism, but the financial strength of the Company demonstrated the always-true phenonmenon of the correlating power obtained. Endorsed by the Britain Empire, the Company became the governors of India and controlled the sea trade in Asia. During its history of two and a half centuries, it formulated the administrative model for Britain in their thereafter bureaucratic system, demonstrated the trading model and the economic problem of monopoly, imported to India and China the inventions of the West during the Industrial Revolution and catalysed the evolution of colonialism. The First Opium War in China was caused by the quarrel between the Company and the local government in China. Quoted from the Times Magazine, "The Company accomplished a work such as in the whole history of the human race no other company ever attempted and as such is ever likely to attempt in the years to come."

The Posting of Matteo Ricci...(4/8)

Matteo Ricci is a name that I have heard of for long time since I was young at my school founded by Society of Jesus. Yet, it is until recently when I read about the modern history of China that I recognise the name again...I am not a religious follower, but the life and the dedication of Ricci to his preaching and missionary is actually quite interesting. Viewing from a perspective of career and aspiration, Ricci achieved a great work that not many people can do the same I believe. From the data and record I have read, Ricci should be a talented diplomat. He studied law, philosophy, theology, mathematics, cosmology and astronomy on top of his reglious studies during his youth, not to mention his geography and language skill. Clearly science, litterature and religion had been so closely correlated during his time. He made his first visit to China on 7 August, 1582 to Macau. At that time, Guangdong is the region where the western world could approach the dragon easier with their advanced troops. There had been quarrels and fights during these visits though. As a diplomat to visit and then stay in a strange but spacious continent, Ricci put his faith to his mission and managed to achieve his "business result". It's a bit like the role of astronaut nowadays I must admit. A foreigner (or "etranger") to arrive at a strange place and to carry out his belief and settle down in a new environment. He seemed easily get through the cultural barrier with the help of his handy belongings. The Chinese were amazed by his "toys and games" including the mechanical clocks, mathematical and astronomical instruments, light-refracting prisms and glasses, architectural plan and oil paintings etc. This is indeed a demonstration of culture shock to the Chinese people at that time. But after all, it was the "World Map" that drew much interest of the Chinese people. We the Chinese had been so innocent to the world. At the mid 16th century, people in China still thought that the world compose of China plus a marginal surrounding of sea...
History repeats itself, and when we look into the interesting life of Ricci, we resemble some experiences or plans of our own too. After centuries, we are still innocent about our world. People may use the word "universe" instead of the world (or the Earth), but there is no big difference in terms of our narrow understanding about the nature and our life. With a useful means to get the trust from the Chinese, Ricci smoothly established a relationship with the Chinese people, and more importantly the government officials, and he managed to establish churches and have his followers to God in the Guangdong area. He moved to Nanjing afterwards and finally spent nine years in Beijing. Tactically, this is the direction where he could reach moe influential people and facilitate his preaching work. He successfully produced the Chinese version of the Ten Commandments, and this broke through the language barrier for the Chinese too. This are all something not easy to achieve.
On top of the religious influence in China (and Hong Kong), Ricci bridged the intellectual exchange between China and the West, and the way of preachers and fathers like him set up an education model that benefits not only the people of their time, but also the nowadays generation like me. I did not really attend to any belief or doctrine of the religion but the education belief of Society of Jesus has much influence to myself. This is somewhat I feel thankful.
Earning my experience to work overseas now, I have more imagination of how difficult Ricci might have encountered for his mission. To adapt to an environment and get into the society need not be handy. I note that one must possess some sort of characters and open mind to understand a different culture or society. Well, interestingly history books actually note down case studies and doctrine of what we would encounter everyday. What a pity that I have not spent much time studying the past in the past...
But well, I feel like understanding a bit more about "R.I.C.C.I." Ricci now.

Illegal Chinese Immigrants in Paris...(22/6)

How come there are always news like this??

Extracted from ATP
Tens of thousands of illegal Chinese immigrants are living in the Paris area, where many work in conditions of extreme poverty and isolation, according to a report from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) released on Tuesday...Smuggled into France by criminal gangs, the men and women are indentured to sweatshops and restaurants where they spend years paying off the cost of their journey. Many live in constant fear of discovery and never leave their homes.
The report puts the number at 50,000, 70% of them in Paris, and 30% in the northern and eastern suburbs. The language barrier prevents them from asking for help or having access to associations which aid victims of forced labour. Work inspectors and police say that very few of them lodge a complaint. Illegal Chinese immigrants began arriving in large numbers in Europe between 10 and 15 years ago, responding to painful economic restructuring at home. Most are from rural regions of China and have little education. Paris harbours one of the biggest communities. Because visas are almost impossible to come by, the immigrants rely on underground networks of people-smugglers who charge between EUR 12,000 and EUR 20,000 for the journey, according to the report.
Traffickers take the immigrants' identity papers at the start of the trip and hand them to their employers in Paris. These then retain a portion of the immigrants' salary to reimburse the debt.
The report's authors found that most immigrants work in clothes-manufacturing, restaurants or the building trade, where they receive between EUR 300 and EUR 500 a month for work days of up to 18 hours...

There has been wide coverage of this incidence last month in France, and it was exactly the period when the claim of post-quota "invasion" of the Chinese textile and garment to EU countries was in place... After staying in Paris for a while, I strongly sense the emotion of the French people towards China and us the Chinese. There is a general perception about China where the country can offer cheap labour and price-cutting production. This is an opportunity and a threat to their economy in France. China is a fancyland to quite some companies here. They are thinking about the feasibility to produce, not necessarily only in the Eastern Europe but, at the same time, the labour group here has an adverse feeling to the threat of Chinese labours that could take away their job. In general, French people appear to me quite self-centred. They preserve so well their culture and history and they are proud to their nation, and in addition to the geographical separation, French people, though much interested in the Oriental culture from China, know only from a foreigner perspective about our culture and recent development. This is certain why not many people really know too much about Hong Kong. Under this situation, any incidence happened in France relating to Chinese people can impose an instant image to their perception to the Chinese. There has been media coverage talking about the hygiene problem of the local Chinese restaurants in Paris, the massive increase of Chinese imported textile and garment products in 2005, the opportunity in China in various industries to French companies etc...and now this is the suspected incidence of spy act from the Chinese students...without much effort done by the local Chinese representatives, it may not be difficult for us to imagine how the French people would project an image to Chinese at this moment...

Pro-protectionism in lieu of a "oui"?...(14/4)

Extracted from Expatica, Paris
French President Jacques Chirac on Thursday denounced what he called "the brutal and unacceptable invasion" of Europe by Chinese textiles and said the EU would within a fortnight take measures to stem the flow..."There is every reason to think, and in any case it is the position of France and I am sure we will be followed on this, that (European Union) safety clauses will be applied within 10 to 15 days," he told French television.
The European Commission said earlier Thursday it aimed to decide on April 25 whether to launch an investigation into booming Chinese textile imports, the first step towards applying limits allowed under World Trade Organisation rules. Europe's textile industry is pressing the commission, the EU executive, to impose safeguard measures to curb a flood of Chinese imports that followed the end of a global quota system on January 1.
"There was clearly a brutal and unacceptable invasion of the European market and of the American market by Chinese textiles, beyond what is acceptable within the framework of free trade," Chirac said.
"The Americans ... have already reacted and have imposed safety clauses," he added.
-------------------------------------------------
Taking into consideration the political crisis the President is facing now. His speech and attitude to the textile import from China is again a gesture to acquire the general support from his citizens to back him for the Referendum on May 29 and thus the EU-as-one vision for collective decision making among the 25 countries...to a certain extent, it may help....
