Sunday Ride...(29/8)

Geneva / Bellevue / Versoix / Coppet / Nyon / Rolle / Le Coutet / Morges / Preverenges / Lausanne (66km)

5 Swiss Francs...(29/8)

I was strolling along the hilly road in the centre of Lausanne. I was curious and stopped by an antique shop. The display was full of old coins of different face values and design. I looked at them, and I saw this 5 swiss franc coin. The appearance was like those which are circulating in Switzerland. I thought it must be a memorable or a special edition one. The year of production, as shown on the coin, was 1968. So it was like 42 years. Then I puzzled, how come it would value at 500CHF? Was 1968 a very special year, or were there some samples manufactured that had deviated from the conventional 1968 coins? I remembered that I had a 5-franc coin in my pocket...I took it out and had a look. Mine was also a 1968?! There was a 'B' below the year on my coin, and I stared at the coin in the display again. It was small but I guessed it was an 'A'. It must be an 'A' and so I guessed there must be 2 editions in 1968 to make a rare one more collectable and valuable. I was hoping to enter the shop to ask, but it was closed...anyway, I took a photo. When I came back and looked at the photo again. Oh it was also a 'B', and so why? My query was never answered...I thought about my coin. Oh, basically I ended my day trip visiting a porcelain museum, and I used the coin for my entrance. Funny though, let me check again my upcoming 5-franc coin when I get my next one...
Value is a matter of 'used-to-be', I guess.

Patek Philippe...(28/8)

Visiting the museum has been one of my plans when I first arrived at Geneva this summer, but it was until the last weekend before my departure that I had a chance to visit the museum. Out of my expectation, the collection house showed off its abundant reserves of gorgeous ancient watches and clocks. It was a great pleasure for me to look at the stylish classic watches during the art nouveau and art deco era. From the glance of the collection, the skillful use painting technique has featured one of the successful reasons to explain the brand's best of its class during its centuries of history. A watch in the museum is like a historical approach to the modern development of watches and clocks. One of the most attractive vitrines is definitely its display of different pocket watches the brand manufactured for royal families and rich people in the 19th century. See how the company could commercialise its production with the different taste of kingdoms and clientele. The aesthetic focus of the exhibition unexpectedly under-weighs the technical side of its fine artisan mechanics applied to their products. Just to learn about the Czech heritage of the brand and to me, the product itself is a classy demonstration of art and technology overtime. See how waterproof was made a century ago, the evolution of multi-timing design, the retro-style of pilot watches in the 30's...imagination has never been compromised over time.

Velo, vers l'eau...(11/7)

Routing: (Geneva / Chene-Bougeries / Chene-Bourg / Gaillard / Annemasse / Vetraz-Monthoux / Cranves-Sales / Viuz-en-Sallaz / St Jeoire / Mieussy / Flerier / Les Gets / Morzine)
Yet another wonderful but tough journey, and in this occasion an energy-consuming but eco-friendly means to participate in a cycling trip along the trail of Tour de France. Stage 8 of this year's tournament kicked start the first mountainous routing near the Switzerland border in the Rhone-Alps region, where I could viably follow the itinerary and ride on the route from Geneva centre. In order to stay way ahead of the players, I started my journey early in the Sunday morning. With my heavily basic and lo-fi city bike (or proclaimed by somebody as a 'classic' bicycle), the journey commenced smoothly, and with an expectation to climb up the mountain, I tried to keep my pace at a stable and manageable manner to attempt my 5-hr anticipated ride and reach the summit before 13h. The scenery along the road was magnificently like an extended moving painting in real terms. I started to catch some other audience practitioners from Vetraz-Monthoux area. The jerseys other cyclists wore coloured the path and since a very long time I finally felt a sense of recognition about cycling, and then scattered cycling partners started to joined me to challenge the sloppy journey from Mieussy. As a joyful event, residence of the region tried their different means to show respect to the mountain climbers. Gardening red and white flowers were used to make decorative maillot a pois rouges along the roadside, in addition to other bicycle-related slogans and messages. The yellow messages on the slope illustrated the French style of cheers and notions. Supporters arrived and set their beings with caravans, sun-bath towel, umbrellas, ringing bells, picnic tables etc. on both sides of the route, and every time when cyclists passed by them, a whole-heartedly expression of appreciation was given to the sportsmen, and then the spirit of Tour de France was passed to the next level on the slope.
The very sunny weather heated up the road, and it was a tough up-moving exercise for all the amateurs. I struggled much to raise my every level of altitude from the basic step, but a collective move became much of a motivation for cyclists and people with a bike on the way to carry on the hardship and perhaps still a self-esteemed glory-to-be. With my additional loading of the SLR camera, the unbearable lightness of being viewed by Kundera became a gorgeous flying move perceived by me. I added my weight to the reversed gravity and at the end of the tunnel, it was totally beautiful being on the summit. My parents called upon a stay on the top of the summit, and this was a metaphorical existence I have therefore breathed and sensed.
The French way of propaganda in the sports activities is lovely. A publicity parade hosted by the lane-long ad-wrapped vehicle troop commercialised the tournament in a receptive manner, and the freebies intensified the festive mood of the audience. Subsequent with the accidents occurred in the first half of the race, the champion arrived at Morzine at around 16h, and joined with the clamps and the praises, the day ended gracefully. The passion I found from the spectators in front of the TV report session lifted me a wind-breaking ride back to Geneva.

Karmacoma...(8/7)

I would say this is one of the best performances I have ever seen in recent years. If it was not that the vocal performance of 3D was not as perfectly as expected, I would rate this a full-score gig! After close to two decades, I finally got a chance to watch their live. When the group came out as the leading figure of the trip hop movement in the mid 90’s, no one could have imagined how their music would transform powerfully to become totally organic and stardom-rock electronica. Massive Attack played 2 hours in the Montreux Jazz Festival, and while I never configure how their music is categorised as jazz, their 6+ music performers on the stage elaborated the energetic percussion-founded root in their music journey since last decade. With 2 full sets of percussion on both sides of the stage, the show was a transformation of modernised interpretation of trip hop or drum and bass. The stage design and the stage lighting were gorgeous. The visual projection signified the humanitarian message of the music group in their works, and the intensity of world messages Massive Attack brought in front of the stage crucified the world of ignorance…

The joy of listening Massive Attack’s live also came from the re-arrangement of the synthesis of their songs. Ranging from the lively groove bassline, the banging drum hits to the murmuring vocal combination, the live interpretation of Massive Attack’s music world was fully backed with a rich spectrum of instrument sounds and it was truly another level of music journey. The flashing lighting or the visually-loaded messages in words and numbers were a live protest to current politics and human security. When the group played teardrops in front of a silhouette vision of eye, the vivid sound just matched the innocent sense of the hollowing big eye on the stage. It was when a metamorphic release of light beams scattering all over the stage that dignified the world of teardrops. Featuring Martina Topley Bird, Massive Attack also played their unreleased song of invade me. Horace Andy was another star on the stage during the performance. His signature voice simply invaded the music hall! He brought the angel and the spittling atoms into the eardrum divinely. Massive Attack also performed the anthem Karmacoma in the encore session, and the evergreen trip hop classic was a perfect reply to Martina’s Overcome.

Martina is red...(8/7)

Congratulations to Martina’s latest release of solo album in Swiss. I attended her last gig before the official release, and it was a minimalistic session of live performance. Martina has been the kind of diva-vocal to me appearing in great music work of Massive Attack and Tricky etc., and stepping away from the mega-cast, her own project demonstrates some more profound dimension of her music world. With the eccentric use of sound instruments, she takes much advantage of her unique voice to sample the vocal and experiment her beautiful tone as one of the key elements in her songs. The gig was lovely, and the lo-fi set up on the stage simply reinforced her humane music language, not to mention her eye-catching reddish evening dress. It was beautifully touching when she performed 'overcome' at the end of the show. It must be a memorable musical trip for her in the era of Maxinquaye...

Bourgeois Jazz...(8/7)

How cliché would it be to have ever installed the festive atmosphere in the soundless lake-side town every summer, like the peaceful Montreux along Lake Leman? And becoming the 44th time of its kind, the Montreux Jazz Festival has continued to impress the participants and music-lovers who come over to seek for a speechless tone of hysteric enjoyment. My visit to this picturesque town during the festival showed me a different story of the classy quiet Swiss town that totally differs from my impressionistic visit years ago. I cannot agree more to the organiser to pick Montreux as the heart of the festival. Everything matched perfectly to the joyful mood of the jazz music: the bourgeois-style souvenir booths along the lake promenade, the elegant visitor crowd, the whitey tent of food stalls, the choice of regional food and drinks, the casual scattered clusters of visitors by the lake, the sunset and the holiday, and then, you begin to understand how a speech could be handicapped to echo the as-it-wish style of music world existed.
There is no way reminding you of any hectic notion in modern life, not even any occasional ripple reasoning our existence on the mirror of realistic reflection. Simplicity and enjoyment, I believe, could be the basic doctrine of the hippie-improvisation people share in the jazzy setting of happening in Montreux every summer. We need some warm-up to return to the less perfect world.

Long time no see...(1/7)

Laying on the lake bank, I saw the sky after long time. It did not look familiar to me, though we had been so close. Distinctly characterised by the bubbling clouds probably streamed from the rippling movement of the lake, I slowed down my heart to try catching a moment of resonance with the strange world. I have been more like accompanying the flow of the world than walking on my way to try construct my perceived world. This was a strange feeling from all senses but the consciousness appeared to be an innocent victim in this gradual transformation of age. The recognition of life became a stopping-watch-like feature eroding in the silence of state. Every moment was supposed to be memorable, but the luxurious treasure rapidly synthesised with the other uncounted possibilities. The date was no longer too significant in the calendar, and the courageous step came after every other motion of the world. I guess the best way to benchmark a reference point of existence is a navigational stare to the unfamiliar sky (again), as this proves right now at least to be an insulating action for the next-to-be.

Genève Cluster...(1/6)

Small city big people. A week has empowered the drilling cell of navigation and orientation. Without any prospective mode of spatial existence re-engineering, I found myself retro-imitating my déjà-passé backpack nomadism. Displacement encourages my reinforced respect to Taoist style of destiny. Moving from the collectivism to the international node of Chung King shadow (more)...
...you learn about yourself. It is the simplest way to diagnoses one’s materialistic need out of nothing. The city is internationalised, and it carries enjoyable talk in every spot, despite the varying level of profound perception and recognition. It is calm, and peaceful, as reflected by the enclosed lake. People practise their small dreams with big steps. Like every urban city, it digests the urge of time into its way of expression – a fair and unbiased motive with sincere gesture, but it is located too far from the spots of conflicts and unrest…

鬱單越洲...(20/8)

Extracted from <<起世經卷>>, there has been a detailed description about this '鬱單越洲'. Since the debut of human civilisations, there are always paradises like this where people would be very much willing to go...the Eden of purity, the Greek's myth of Zeus' world, our Confucianism about the perfect society or Sir Thomas More's imaginative Utopia. The perfectionism exists somewhere perhaps. I thought about the hypotheses when I was touring in Switzerland. The piece of land seems to have separated from the rest of the world, where wars and conflicts happen every moment, should all the telecommunication and media channels be cut away. Reading the paragraphs about the perfect life in 鬱單越洲, the continent is in fact further and further away from our habitat. There is a strong disconnection about the place and our reality in modern life. The justification of many long-life religious doctrines appear to be less convincing in the post-era of decadence at present, and the more you imagine about the idealism, the less you may be able to get satisfied. What a pity.

Natural Beauty...(15/8)

Life is repetitive, if you think so. After a puppy journey long time ago, I went to Switzerland again recently and then I recognise that I have been so young...the country is famous for its tranquility and picturesque scenery, and lying at the heart of the Europa, the places are really a bit too dreamy. I took nearly the same route as my previous visit from France to enter Switzerland, but I made a switch of the first stop to Geneva instead of Bern. My memory about Geneva before I re-visited the city had been only the three-leg chair outside the headquarter of the United Nations. I did not understand why my previous memory of the country had been so pale and blurred, but I did enjoy this unconsciousness for fresh idea and understanding about the place. Geneva is a business centre in the western part, and it provides a very pleasant habitat for people. My general impression about the Swiss is a very peaceful and relaxed country, and it actually is. The landscape offers the Swiss an unbelievable beautiful playground of nature. The lake areas beside major cities serve as a placebo to purify the contaminated roughness of human ego and arrogance in the world. I passed by Lake Geneva, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and Lake Luzerne, and in front of the calmness of waterground, words become useless and stupid.
I re-did the trip from Interlaken to Jungfrau, but rather than climbing up via Lauterbrunnen, I tried the path of Grindelwald this time. Claiming Top of Europe, the tourist centre on Jungfrau is actually located at 3454m above sea level, 700m below the tip of the mountain range. The mountain is indeed much below the height of Mount Kenya (5199m) I went before. A 100% journey for tourists, there is not much special at the centre of Jungfraujoch, but the stunning scenery along the hilly way was a fascinating journey. I still recalled the climax feeling when I first took the train to the top in the summer of 1998, but facing the scenery again this time, I replaced my curiosity about the world with a much deepening respect to the nature and the possibility of our world. The weather was fine throughout the trip and I took a hiking route from Kleine Scheidegg to Brandegg.

I was very much touched by the colour of 'green' in the films of Tarkovsky, and while I was walking down the mountain, I witnessed the much translation of green in nature. This is always something which can peace a mind.
Hotel management is reputed in Swiss, but that doesn't mean that all the hotels are good in the country, at least there is some variation between my expectation and my experience this time. Not sure what is going on in Korea apart from its robust recovery of economy, Korean tourists were influx everywhere in Switzerland. This is something unexpected.
