When you look into the weathy content of the European history and culture, there are many specialties that worth life-long researching. To me, a few of these have fascinated my scope and thoughts recently. As a beginner, let's share some of your thoughts and findings...
I. The armory general and the coat-of-arm
The interesting combinations and artworks of coat-of-arm (le blason et les corporations) attract much of my interest after I came to Paris. The traditional arts for the royal and the noble class in the past developed its variety in army fashion as well as signs for the shields. The design of identities varies from place to place, and from a little sign, you can discover so much treasures in the past...I was visiting the Chateau de Chantilly a few months before, and there was a very comprehensive showcase display of the French bindings and coats-of-arm for the different cities and regions. This should be the most informative display I have seen so far. I tried to search for some books or illustration of the bindings from the bookstore but nothing has been found...
I met a professional who works for heraldry in Scotland, and she introduced 2 books for me, "Illustrations to the Armorial General" by V. Rolland et al and "The General Armory". I got a chance to look for the books on amazon.com. Indeed there is no stock available on the bookstore, while there is one second hand copy available ( )...the price is quite scary though...
II. Les mascarons
The facade and architecture in Paris is fascinating, and among the numerous elements, the mascarons should be a remark to the outlook of the buildings and structure. Again, when I look for information about the mascarons, I did not find much information about the subject from wikipedia, yahoo or amazon. Seems that I do not manage to find the right track...
