Like the other 80,000 fans, I have watched a Champion League match of Juventus Vs Liverpool in Turin, the second major industrial city in Italy after Milan. As expected, the city is full of the sense of industrial emotion with a relatively tranquil atmosphere...... Not really a very hot spot for the tourist, the city was actually the capital of Italy before 1945 and it's the headquarter of the Italian giant Fiat. Again, the city resembles the basic requirement of being a major city by possessing a river bank at the city centre. I got a taste from the Mole Antonelliana the urban pattern of the city. Quite impressively to me, Turin is having a systematic building group outlook from the perspective of a height. Another important possession of Turin is its Juventus soccer club, and the stadium of the team is located 45mins by bus from the city centre. Because of the attraction of the soccer club and the physical location of the relatively remote stadium, it creates a commuter flow quite unique when compared with other industrial cities in Europe. Having understood more the local culture in Europe, you will find that soccer industry is actually quite a significant component to the economical development of a local city, no matter how the revenue can be gained from souvenir shops, advertising and boardcasting fees, tourist influx, licensing or any other services means. This forms also a basic social bondage to the community. The development is something I find quite amazing. The same experience has occurred in my other visit in Metz or Marseilles. The upcoming 2006 World Cup in Germany is believed to be another climax of soccer-tourism in the region. This is the same rationale for Turin in 2006. The city will be hosting the Winter Olympics Game, and due to the Committee requirements I guess, the local government has showcased from their every tourist spot in the city centre their accomplishment (or investment) on road construction, main spot revitalisation as well as other urban renewal projects. Well, there is no news in this World. We shall see more in 2008 at the Olympics Games.

a great post, definitely more entertaining than the match itself.
right. Culturally, this is the difference between European people and Hong Kong people. If HKTB has not only installed the hardware like the Film Star Avenue or Cultural City with the skyline facade etc but more explored and nurtured the software of the city. It would definitely be a more sustainable campaign. When will we have a Juventus team in Hong Kong or a museum of the local Kung-fu fiction writer on the Lion Mountain?
Well, in the 60s and 70s, we did have teams like South China and Seiko, which were probably the strongest teams in Asia.
Now, ...
By the way, do you support any team in particular? I am a big fan of Arsenal.
Woo...perhaps it's not of any favour to the others. My team is Southampton, and they are really struggling now for the relegation...good luck!! The situation is not really optimistic now! Arsenal is a good team with quite some impressive young players. The problem is that they lack the capability to perform in big match! How would be the match tonight with Chelsea?? Do you have connection to watch the match at your end?
yes, the foxtel pay tv here broadcast around 6 premiership matches each week. arsenal is covered around 80% of the time.
this week, they are showing the southampton/portsmouth match ... and also the north london derby.
zirhc, there must be an interesting story behind someone becoming a southampton fan. would you like to share it with us readers?
as for the reason why i bacome a fan of arsenal, the story goes like this: big fan of the dutch total football ... regard van basten as the most elegant footballer ever ... believe that bergkamp may become the next van basten ... bergkamp joins arsenal ... bergkamp is great but not in the van basten class and dutch infightings disgust me ... doesn't matter now, since arsenal under wenger plays beautiful (though fragile) football.
this is good having LIVE soccer every week. The situation here in Paris is similar. There is a channel showing matches every week. It's a disappointed result today for Southampton again. They are in real trouble and the chance to keep alive is really marginal. Their next two matches versus Norwich and Crystal Palace would be most important. Yes, the team had once upon a time a great player named LeTissier, who were the leader of the team and the charater and playing style amused me a lot. He was always an unlucky player who did not show much chance to play in the national squad. He played in and only in Southampton and he showed great loyalty to the club. He refused invitation from the Man U for a move which was believed to bring him to another climax in his career. Well, Southampton is such a team which can possess story like this.
Under the era of Gordon Strachan, the team was playing stunning style of pragmatic soccer. Too bad that the manager could not work with the managemnt board at last and he decided to leave the Club for long vacation. The Club is in close discussion with Jonny Wilkinson, the hero of England Rugby team for an innovative change of the soccer team management, but this has yet been materialised...
Southampton gave birth to many great strikers like Alan Shearer and James Beatiee.
Well, this is a team which is ran with limited budget, and they should be respectful. The team has suffered severe management problem, and definitely the 3 consecutive managers in the season are not the class...
Let's see how they can grasp their ultimate chance to survive.
