My friend dated me at a new Starbucks in Saint Michel, and for the first time since I have left Hong Kong 16 months ago, I went into the cafe giant again, ironally, in one of its shops in Paris...I tried their new item Mocha Banane, and when I sat on the sofa, I realised the uniqueness of those cafes I went to in Paris which I might have missed. The Starbucks was nicely decorated, clean, modernly managed and commercialised. It's a comfortable environment for a quiet moment, but oddly I felt a bit strange when I realised that I was actually sitting somewhere in Paris. I recalled how a typical Parisien cafe would be like...a bit smoky, cozy (or I should say limited space), small round tables, terrace, sunshine if there is any, Parisian type of service, expresso, pay before you go, no surname would be asked when ordered, art nouveau design (meaning decoration was done some era ago)...
This is what Paris is, something I like a lot, a state I named chaotic 'system to be'. Starbucks continues its expansion in Paris, and when you stay in the shop, you would find that the clientele would be youngsters, a symbol of the altitude the new generation eyes on the American culture perhaps. Of course, situated in the number one city of tourism in the world, the American shop has no problem to receive tourists and visitors from other countries from day to night. Drinking coffee becomes a memory of my life in Paris.

From a business point of view, Starbucks is successful in developing and sustaining its brand and image all over the world. You feel the same, taste the same, experience the same no matter where you are. But for me, as a normal customer, I am bored to see the logo again and again, esp. when I want to go abroad and take break for vacation. Nevertheless, I feel proud if my home-bred brands appear in world market. haha~
Lets meet up at one of the Parisian Starbucks for our upcoming (book)sharing section then. :)
Odéon, or rue des Archives, no more St.-Michel pls...
Holaholahola, well, I agree with you and I guess a monopolised market is never too interesting for consumers...
Kirque, instead of one of the Starbucks, I guess you are more content to have been to a double-priced cafe that you can fully test the visibility of your digital camera. You know what...跟Deleuze 對峙出神的感覺...well, it's a kind of meditation.
